Artist Statement

Szabó-Lencz’s work focuses on geometric abstraction, often drawing on the fundamental shapes of the triangle, circle, and square as a foundation for artistic expression. While these forms provide structure, his practice extends beyond them, embracing a broader sensitivity to space, atmosphere, and perception.

Subtly influenced by architectural principles and design, his compositions balance form, order and spatial relationships while allowing room for spontaneity and interpretation. Utilizing hard-edge painting techniques, he experiments with colour, surface and composition, guided by a self-imposed set of rules that harmonise precision with openness to discovery. By constructing and deconstructing these geometric elements, Szabó-Lencz invites a dialogue between the artwork and the viewer—one that reveals the profound potential within simplicity.

Yet, his artistic approach is not confined to a single methodology—he continuously explores new directions, shifting between geometric precision and expressive or emotional effects, where chance and experimentation play a crucial role in its creation. His conceptual and experimental paintings often emerge in series, each guided by a central theme rather than a fixed stylistic framework. In these works, he believes that every act of painting serves as a gentle invitation, reminder, and testimony to the possibilities that exist beyond our control.
